Then you are paying for a scanner that may cost around $100. 

Copiers can vary in price and getting a printer and scanner separately won't give you a copying ability.

Performance of Modern Models are Exceptional

In some cases, it may be better to get a printer and scanner separately even if they are from the same manufacturer especially if the model is quite new because models that are focused specifically on one task often times perform better than an A3 printer.
Maybe the printer is faster on printing speeds or maybe it can support more formats. 

On the scanner side, some scanners may have extra features or more sophisticated scanning software for performing some advanced scans. 

Modern models especially the ones by Brother are catching up to that with many models having decent speeds beyond 20 pages per minute in black or colored ink. 

Scanning performance is improving as well which means that the copying speed and quality is ultimately good making it more practical for offices to get a modern A3 printer instead.

Not only are these special laser printers getting performance boosts, but different manufacturers are making different approaches to gain more coverage on average consumers. 

For instance, many of the latest Samsung A3 printers are very compact making them easier to move from one spot to another. 

There are other models that are so uniquely designed and finely finished to make them worthy for home use as well. More expensive models have the best of both worlds being able to print high resolution images and make very high quality scans.
